Pyramids and the Great Sphinx
All 3 of the Giza Pyramids, with
our wonderful guide, Hala.
It's hard to imagine the mammoth
size of this pyramid from a picture,
but look at the people at the bottom.
Then look below,
at the size of the blocks of limestone that make up this gigantic
pyramid.
And imagine cutting (before iron
was invented),
hauling each stone (from far across the Nile),
and constructing a SOLID pyramid, this huge.
And it had to be done within the lifetime of the Pharoah it was to
entomb.
Look up at the top picture. again,
and just try to imagine.
It boggles the mind!
This pyramid is called the
"Bent Pyramid"
because they began it at the wrong angle,
but were afraid to tell the Pharoah.
When it got too high, and started to crack,
they had to tell him, so he made them change the angle,
AND ALSO begin a whole new one, and finish both before he died.
This is David and Doug Munro in
front of the "Bent" pyramid.
Notice how you can see clearly the surface stones that were on all
pyramids,
but they are mostly gone because people scavanged them to build
houses.
In a side trip to Memphis, we saw
some wonderful statues of
Ramses II, including the "Colossus", above.
Below is another Ramses II statue, with Doug and David
