An Interesting Project: Chime Train Reconstruction

Sometimes we are asked to restore movements that have been seriously damaged or are missing parts. A missing pendulum is one thing, but nearly the entire chime train from this 18th century long case movement had been removed. Only the barrel and quarter snail was saved.

With our Moore jig bore, we were able to map out the location of the surviving holes with .001 accuracy and determine what was missing based on photographs of similar clocks of the period. We reconstructed the train without altering the original clock in any way. Some blanks were fabricated from flat stock in laser and EDM shops, but everything else was machined in the workshop. The tuned quarter bells were supplied by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London.
