Gdansk, Poland

September 5, 2008

The next morning the ship docked in the city of Gydinia,

which was an unpleasant surprise since our destination was the city of Gdansk.

We had found out from the John Lawrence lecture that it was an hour’s bus ride to our destination, so we rushed to the touring office and booked a bus tour into Gdansk.  This turned out to be a blessing and a curse.

Though we did get a bus ride, we also got a very poor guide, who spoke lousy English and seemed to be on his first tour, because he had to read everything and by the time he finished his extensive (and boring) explanation,

we were long past the event.

The funniest thing he said was, for White Russia – it came out “White Trashia”.

We finally got to Gdansk, and had a walking tour (but didn’t listen to the guide much) and then an hour on our own before the trip back to the ship, much of which was spent in a café having coffee and ice cream.

Gdansk is quite amazing, since it was almost completely destroyed

by the Soviets in WWII.

Now a large part of the city has been entirely reconstructed

to the way it was in the 19th Century.

They even used much of the original stone work, salvaged

from the rubble.

This is said to be the largest church in Europe

 build entirely out of brick.

This reconstructed town is obviously a huge tourist attraction,

So there are many buying opportunities.
