Saint Petersburg, Russia (day two)

The Hermitage and the Winter Palace

September 3, 2008

The Winter Palace is the first part of this enormous building (or buildings) that we visited.

Because our guide spoke directly into our head sets, it was easy to hear her narrative

as we swiftly made our way through the breathtaking rooms of the palace,

with other tour groups before and after.

.

We then moved into the museum sections, with room after room of

Art masterpieces filling every room.

To the right is a statue by Michelangelo.

This is the clock that legend says stopped the minute

Tsar Nicholas II was killed.

I was not allowed to take photos of the incredible collection of

French Impressionists.  We were only given 20 minutes to look

at all these rooms full of masterpieces we’d never even seen, even in

reproduction.  I could easily have spent 2 hours in those rooms.
